Homeostasis: The maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment. The body trying to stay in balance.

Tissue: A group of similar cells that perform a common function

Organ: a collection of tissues that carry out a specialized function of the body

 

How many body systems there are and the main role of each (excluding reproductive- this is covered in Health next year)

  • Skeletal- supports and protects your body

  • Muscular-allows you to move

  • Integumentary- protects tissues

  • Cardiovascular- heart and blood move through body

  • Respiratory-allows you to breathe

  • Immune-fights germs and disease

  • Digestive-takes nutrients from food

  • Excretory- removes waste from body

  • Nervous-sends and receives electrical messages in body

  • Endocrine-chemical messengers/hormones

  • Reproductive-creates more humans

 
  • The levels of organization are: cell--tissue--organ--organ system--organism

 
  • The types of tissue in the body

    • nervous

    • epithelial

    • connective

    • muscular

 
  • Be ready to tell examples of how organ systems work together-

    • The muscular and skeletal systems work together to help you move. The muscles are attached to bones which help you move.

    • The digestive system takes nutrients from your food and the cardiovascular system moves them throughout the body. The excretory system removes the waste.
