Lesson 4

Once people began to realize that computers could help with daily tasks, they began to wonder if computers could help with teaching, as well. Some people believed that traditional teaching was too labor intensive and felt that the next best step would be computer-based education. Now, however, people believe that computers should be used as a support tool for education, rather than a replacement for teachers. With this innovative idea of having technology in the classroom, people began to develop software to help use technology to teach. The six instructional software that we discussed in the lesson are:

  • Drill and Practice
  • Tutorial
  • Simulation
  • Instructional Game
  • Problem Solving
  • Integrated Learning Systems

Instructional Software Functions

ISTE Standards

The standard that best represents this assignment and lesson is Standard 7: Analyst. As teachers, it is our job to find how best to teach our students. Before technology, teachers taught students by using physical material, like paper, or by just lecturing the students. Using technology provides us with an alternate way to teach students in the classroom. By using technology, teachers can create a variety of formative and summative assessments, and get immediate feedback as well. Using this feedback, teachers can help guide future learning and can communicate with parents and school officials on what a student needs to work on.

InTASC Standards

I believe that Standard 6: Assessment best relates to what we talked about in this lesson. Using these different types of software, teachers can assess students and get feedback to assess their needs. Most of the instructional software can be used for assessing students.

CAEP Standards

CAEP Standard 1: Content and Pedagogical Knowledge relates to the lesson and assignment because instructional software is a technological tool that allows students to demonstrate their own knowledge to show readiness for further education. This software also engages students while they are using it.
