Health

Context:

This is a math lesson which integrated a health lesson about the four main food groups.  I taught this lesson to Mrs. Edwards second grade class at R. Brown McAllister Elementary.

Impact:

Through this lesson the students learned to interpret data using a graph which meets the following math objectives:

1.04     Develop fluency with multi-digit addition and subtraction through 999 using multiple strategies.

            a. Strategies for adding and subtracting numbers.

1.05     Create and solve problems using strategies such as modeling, composing and decomposing quantities, using doubles, and making tens and hundreds.

4.01     Collect, organize, describe and display data using Venn diagrams (three sets) and pictographs where symbols represent multiple units (2's, 5's, and 10's).

This lesson also taught students about the importance of healthy eating and the four main food groups, which met the following health standards:

COMPETENCY GOAL 4: The learner will apply knowledge and behavior self

management skills to areas of nutrition and physical activity for healthy growth,

development, and maintenance.

Objectives

4.01 Identify the amount of food from each food group of My Pyramid needed each

day to achieve and maintain good health.

4.02 Summarize the benefits of healthy eating.

Alignment:

I met the following NC Standards for Elementary Teachers through this lesson:

Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living.

Indicator 1: Teachers understand the foundations of good heath and help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

I met this standard through the food groups lesson.  We learned about the sections of the food pyramid, what foods were in each group, and how many servings they should be eating from each group.  We discussed that the smaller the section on the pyramid the lesser amount they should intake.  We used grocery ads to create our own collage style food pyramid.  The students learned about healthy eating and its' importance.  They learned they would stay well, have more energy, and stay fit if they followed the healthy eating pattern of the food group pyramid.

Context:

This is a reflection written during my student teaching in second grade on the importance of health in the school.

Impact:

Through my knowledge of these health concerns the students will meet these standards:

COMPETENCY GOAL 2: The learner will develop knowledge and skills to enhance

personal and consumer health.

Objectives

Alignment:

This reflection helps me meet the following NC Standards for Elementary Teachers:

Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living.

Indicator 1: Teachers understand the foundations of good heath and help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

I met this indicator because in order to teach the students I must have a foundation of good health and then teach the students about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Indicator 2: Teachers are alert to major health issues related to children.

I met this indicator because I am aware of the health issues within the school and in our nation.  I understand the problem of obesity and the importance to exercise.  I am also aware of the importance of helping children prevent spreading germs through proper hygiene and hand washing.  These are major issues in the elementary sc.hool that must be addressed.

Standard 13:  Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice of skills that contribute to good health.

I met this standard, because I worked with the nurse to provide the students a lesson on proper hand washing and hygiene during the cold and flu season.
