Sound

Music (Sm.)

Context:

This sound unit was created for Mrs. Ashlyn Edward's second grade class at R.Brown McAllister.  This unit includes six lessons, a field trip, and two formal assessments along with informal assessments throughout.

Impact:

Through lesson the students met the following NC Standard Course of Study Objectives:

4.07 Compose first drafts using an appropriate writing process:

  • planning and drafting.
  • rereading for meaning.

revising to clarify and refine writing with guided discussion.

Competency Goal 4: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of the concepts of sound.

Objectives

4.01 Demonstrate how sound is produced by vibrating objects and vibrating columns of air.

4.02 Show how the frequency can be changed by altering the rate of the vibration

4.03 Show how the frequency can be changed by altering the size and shape of a variety of instruments.

4.04 Show how the human ear detects sound by having a membrane that vibrates when sound reaches it.

4.05 Observe and describe how sounds are made by using a variety of instruments and other "sound makers" including the human vocal cords.

Alignment:

This unit helped me meet the following NC Standards for Elementary Teachers:

Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.

Indicator 2: Teachers have knowledge of basic physical science concepts including:

  • Systems of measurements, analysis, and interpretation of data
  • Structure and properties of matter
  • Factors affecting chemical reactions
  • Forces of motion
  • Electromagnetism
  • Waves and optics (light, heat, and sound)
  • Sources, forms, conservation of energy

I met this standard through my unit of sound.  Sound is a form of energy.  Through my unit I taught that sound was a form of energy.  I taught the students about vibrations, frequency, pitch, volume, and assessed the students in various ways.  I had to have a knowledge of sound and its' components in order to create and teach this unit.

Standard 7: Elementary teachers use developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all areas of the elementary curriculum.

Indicator 2: Teachers understand and use an interdisciplinary approach to teaching by connecting and integrating language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, healthful living, and arts concepts and processes, with appropriate technologies to enhance their teaching.

I met this standard because this unit is a science unit on sound, but I also integrated a language arts lesson into the unit and the students had a variety of activities in their sound folders that required a knowledge of language arts.  The students wrote a personal narrative using onomatopoeias.

Indicator 3: Teachers promote new learning by using students’ prior knowledge, misconceptions, and interests when designing lessons

I met this standard because I conducted a pretest to figure out the students prior knowledge of sound before creating the unit.  I also used the knowledge I had that the students learned best from visuals and hands-on learning to create my unit.
