The Arts

Colored Pencils (Lg.)

Context:

These two art lessons were created for Mrs. Ashlyn Edward's second grade class at R. Brown McAllister Elementary School.  The Dr. Seuss lesson was used in conjunction with the Dr. Seuss unit used during the week of Dr. Seuss' birthday and the Rechenka's Eggs lesson was during our study of eggs and life cycles.

Impact:

These lessons met the following art standards for the NC Standard Course of Study for the Arts for second grade:

1.03 Develop strategies for imagining and implementing images.

2.03 Express moods and feelings.

3.06 Create work which shows more complex organization.

6.03 Value art that does not rely on copying or tracing others' work

Alignment:

These two lessons met the NC Standards for Elementary Teachers:

Standard 12: Working alone, or with arts specialist teachers and/or other qualified arts professionals, elementary teachers are able to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum.

I met this standard because I used art lessons, which were ingegrated into my reading units.  In the My Many Colored Days lesson, the students used their artistic ability to create an etched picture of their feelings using creativity and many colors.  In the lesson on Rechenka's Eggs, I also used a piece of literature and integrated art and each of the students got to create their own "Rechenka Egg."
