Cartwheel

During my time at Appalachian State University I received a Minor in the Visual Arts. I believe that the arts should be integrated into the elementary curriculum so that students can experience the joys and rewards that the arts bring. I feel that the arts can be integrated with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study to enrich the content that they have learned in the classroom.

I encourage you to go to my Art's Website to view some of the pieces that I have created.

Context:

The attached Foundations of Art Reflection is a paper created under the advisement of Ali Raza, for Foundations of Art (Art 1000) in the Fall of 2005 at Appalachian State University. The paper reflects on information learned during the class, as well as a couple of the projects created for the class.

The attached Master Study Paper was created under the advisement of Daniel Filippone, for Foundations of Drawing (Art 1001) in the Fall of 2005 at Appalachian State University. The paper researches Vincent Van Gogh, a master drawer and painter, as a method  of studying to replicate one of his drawings.

Impact:

During my time at Appalachian State, I have earned a Minor in the Visual Arts. I believe that the arts are an important way for students to learn and connect information from all subjects. I feel that if students are able to see, make, feel, sing, and act out information, it will connect better to their own experiences, and therefor they will learn it more easily. The arts are an important part of my life, and as a teacher, I intend to use the visual arts, music, dance, and acting as a regular part of instruction.

Alignment:

Standard 6: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the basic concepts of the arts.

Indicator 1: Teachers understand the basic vocabularies, materials, techniques, and thinking processes of each arts discipline (art, music, theatre, dance).

I have met this object through taking the Foundations of Art class, and have proven my competence the above art disciplines through the Foundations of Art Reflection paper. The paper discusses various vocabularies learned, multiple methods that I used with different media and styles, various techniques that I practiced, as well as includes information on the importance of art in the classroom.

Indicator 2: Teachers have an informed acquaintance with exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods.

Through studying Vincent Van Gogh, writing the Master Study Paper, and creating a Mater Study Drawing, I have met the above objective. I have learned about the style during Van Gogh's time period, as well as how styles are influenced and changed by what other artists are doing or even by historical events.
