Sarah's Class Webpage

Context:

This teacher classroom webpage was completed under the advisement of Jeff Goodman in the Spring of 2007 for an Integrating Media and Technology class.

Impact:

This website could be beneficial to the students and the parents in a very special way. It provides a link for the parents to stay connected to what is happening in the classroom. The Calendar section can provide the students with an idea of upcoming events in the classroom as well as parents with what topics are going to be covered over the next month. The homework section is beneficial because students can check and make sure that they have completed all of the assignments they were required too. They could also double check to make sure that they had understood the directions appropriately. The Homework section could also be a place for students who missed a class to stay up to date on the homework while they are out. The Photo Gallery provides a place for the students to connect to the class and feel a part of the classroom community. Students can share photos with their parents and feel proud of their achievements. The links that I have provided under the Students/Teachers/Parents sections provide useful (educational) media places for each of these groups to visit.

Alignment:

The Following NETS-T Technology Standards have been met with this assignment.

NETS-T II: Planning and designing learning environments and experiences.

B. Apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environment and experiences.

I have met this objective by creating a media literacy page that contains annotated links to resources and articles about the television viewing habits of today’s youth. These links are appropriate for both parents and teachers.

C. Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.

I have met this objective by locating and providing annotated links to technological resources for parents, students, and teachers. I have provided students with educational games and informative web addresses. For parents I have located information on healthy living habits, parenting tips, and information on special education. For teachers I have provided links to helpful sites about the teaching experience.

E: Plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.

By providing a classroom homework tab, I have met this objective. Including this site will help both parents and students stay connected to what is going on in the classroom, and keep up to date homework assignments. When the homework assignments are made public to the parents, the children will be less likely to forget, or lie to their parents about not having homework.

NETS-T IV: Assessment and Evaluation

B: Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.

The media literacy page in combinations with the literacy survey description and results have helped me to meet this standard. I have conducted a survey to learn about the media habits of the students in my classroom, and have done research about these effects. I have provided links to research that can help to maximize the effects of findings.

NETS-T V: Teachers use technology to enhance professional practice.

A: Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

I have conducted research on media literacy and television habits of students. I have also researched how television can be an effective learning tool if used correctly. I feel that this research has provided me with an ongoing professional development. I have an insight to what the children are doing on their spare time, and have learned how to use that to my advantage as a teacher.

B. Continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.

I have met this objective my providing a short reflection on my experience with this assignment. I have decided about how media in the lives of children can be an effective tool if implemented correctly. I have also learned and reflected about how important it is for children today to be informed about the media and how to respond to it.

NETS-T VI: Social, Ethical, Legal and Human Issues

A: Model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.

C: Identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity.

I have met these objectives by including a photo gallery of the children in the class. The release forms for these photos were sent home, practicing legal technology use. The forms were sent home in English and Spanish.

The following NCDPI Standards For Elementary Teachers have been met with this assignment:

Standard 16: Elementary teachers develop as leaders in their schools and communities by staying informed about educational policy issues and supporting professional development. Elementary teachers participate in co-curricular activities, provide leadership in student and curriculum involvement, and connect these activities to the development of citizenship ideals in their students.

Indicator 1: When developing as leaders in their schools and communities, elementary teachers involve students in activities outside the classroom.

Indicator 3: Teachers communicate with parents, guardians, and caretakers to build partnerships between home and school.

Indicator 8: Teachers research and learn to apply best practices in elementary education and participate in the dissemination of those ideas.

Indicator 9: Teachers understand the importance of collaborating with colleagues to strengthen content, research, and pedagogy as well as with the community to provide quality instruction that meets state competencies.

This website has met this standard by providing students, faculty and parents with a common communication place. The site includes links for students to access information about class outside of the classroom, it gives them safe and educational links to investigate, and it provides them with a place that promotes the community of their class. The website provides parents with a link into what is going on in their child's class, and information on how they can help/get involved. There is also a section on the site for other teachers to share information of the educational nature.

Reflection:

I have really enjoyed building this webpage. Conducting the media survey was really an eye opening experience. I feel that the most surprising result from that survey was the number of kindergarten children who were allowed to watch without supervision. The readings that I have done have encouraged me as a teacher to teach children how to decipher between good media and bad media. Creating the webpage was really a benifical experience as well. I feel that a page like this could help the students in the class be active participants in their classroom experience. One of my main goals in becoming a teacher is to create a community among the students in my class. I feel that this webpage would help the students in creating this community.
