Professional Responsibility (Standard 8)

Meeting (Lg.)

Those who have high thoughts are ever striving; they are not happy to remain in the same place. Like swans that leave their lake and rise into the air, they leave their home and fly for a higher home.

Reflection

I believe that an educator is never finished being the educated.  After graduate school, it will be very easy for me to become out of the loop in the profession of counseling but I can maintain and continue to improve my abilities as a counselor through professional organizations.  This profession will require me to be especially linked in when it comes to legal and ethical issues, consultation, and communication and even new developments in the brain research that will affect student development and my understanding of how to best counsel my students.

Through professional organizations, professional development, and research, I will maintain my awareness of the growth in the profession and make an effort to achieve growth within my program that is parallel to and even greater than that of the school counseling community as a whole.  I will also work to provide professional development to my school to further advocate for our programs as well as to encourage growth in classroom instruction in the way of building relationships with students.

This is the chart that I use on a regular basis to create questions in my lessons. It is also the tool our administration uses when they do walk-through's in our classrooms. This is important for a school counselor when she is teaching her guidance curriculum. (Document acquired through Northgate Middle School)
