Sigma Kappa

unnamed.jpg

I am apart of a sorority here on Longwood's Campus called Sigma Kappa. I wanted to join this sorority in particular because of their values and philanthroy's. During my pledging process I learned all about the history of Sigma Kappa including when we were founded and our founders. Sigma Kappa was founded November 9th 1874 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Here at Longwood University, Sigma Kappa was founded September 19th, 1959 as the Delta Nu chapter. There are five founders: Mary Caffrey Low, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida Fuller, Frances Mann and Louise Helen Coburn. Each of these five ladies contributed towards to wonderful sisterhood, Sigma Kappa. Sigma Kappa has five different philanthropies, which uses the acronym SIGMA. These philanthropies are: Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, Maine Sea Coast Mission and Alzheimer's disease. The jewel is the pearl, and the colors are maroon and lavander.
