Quality and Safety

Quality and safety are very important in my professional life in the emergency department. I'll use CPR as an example. If the quality of CPR is not high enough, you will not succeed in resusitating your patient. If you are not following proper safety measures while doing CPR, you could really hurt yourself (particularly your back).

B1. My old definition still very much applies, but I have a better understanding of what is being asked now so I will expound on my previous definition. Quality is how good something is. Safety is how safe my patients are, my coworkers are, my practice is, and how safe I am personally for myself.

B1a. I already had a good grasp of what quality and safety was before this program. I’ll say that the program helped developed my definition by making me repeat it multiple times in multiple different ways on multiple different assignments; for example, this portfolio.

B1b. The IHI certificate artifact and C489 task 1 from Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership support my definition of quality and safety.

B1b1. IHI supports my definition because it is all about quality and safety. It further enforced my previous knowledge of how to safely practice as a nurse and deliver quality care. C489 task 1 supports my definition because it helped me to understand nursing quality indicators. The nursing quality indicators act as a guide to gauge your care by to make sure you are delivering quality care.

B2. My current employer does not care about the IHI certificate because they have their own versions of safe and quality care education programs that I am required to do. However, if I were ever to need it for a future employer, I now have it so that I can prove without a doubt that I have had education on Safety and Quality Patient Care.
