Evidence-Based Practice

C.  Complete the following within the section “Evidence-Based Practice”:

1.  Reflect (suggested length of 1 page) on your professional definition of evidence-based practice developed in Professional Roles and Values, including any necessary changes to your definition.

Rubric Prompt C1. The candidate provides a relevant reflection, with substantial detail, of a professional definition of evidence-based practice developed in Professional Roles and Values, including any necessary changes to the definition.

a.  Discuss how the program assisted you in developing your professional definition.

Rubric Prompt C1a. The candidate provides a logical discussion, with substantial detail, of how the program assisted in developing a professional definition

b.  Identify the artifacts in your portfolio that support your definition. (Note: The artifacts should be attached in the Appendix)

Rubric Prompt C1b. The candidate identifies the artifacts in support of the definition.

i.  Explain how these artifacts support your definition from part C1.

Rubric Prompt C1b.i. The candidate provides a logical explanation, with substantial detail, of how the artifacts support the definition from part C1.

2.  Reflect (suggested length of 1 page) on your understanding of evidence-based practice and applied nursing research by doing the following:

a.  Discuss how you are able to evaluate current primary research and apply the concepts to your nursing practice, considering the following:

Rubric Prompt C2a. The candidate provides a logical discussion, with substantial detail, of how to evaluate current primary research and apply the concepts to nursing practice, considering the given points. (Given points refer to bullet points)

•  relevancy and believability of data

•  differences between quality improvement and research (places and uses of each)

•  differences between primary and secondary research and resources and the implications of each in clinical practice

In this part of the abstract you describe how you are applying those three bulleted concepts to your personal practice.

For example, when you look for evidence to improve your practice:

·        How do you assess the relevance and believability of the data you find?

·        How do you know when research is needed to improve something or when a quality improvement process is needed?

·        How do you apply research to quality improvement efforts? When you use research in clinical practice, how do you know if/when primary or secondary research should be used?

The best approach is to begin with defining the highlighted terms.  Address all three bullet points. (In rubric C2a, these are the “given points” you are evaluated on).

b.  Explain how your experience in the program helped you achieve excellence in evidence-based practice.

Rubric Prompt C2b. The candidate provides a logical explanation, with substantial detail, of how the candidate’s experience in the program helped the candidate achieve excellence in evidence-based practice.

Describe how using the above concepts has allowed you to make actual improvements in your practice.

·        Give examples from your own practice. These examples can be related to tasks done as part of your BSN program (or can be examples of other work done in your practice where you applied what you learned to make improvements.

·        Try to give at least 2 examples where you initiated an improvement or participated in making an improvement using EBP concepts – this could be anything from raising a practice question, to revising a guideline, to educate your peers on some best practices for your patient population.
