Phish!

If you've talked to me for longer than five minutes, you know that Phish and their music is one of my greatest passions. I traveled to Maine and the Everglades to watch them perform and many other places in-between. If you've never seen or heard them, below is a video from a recent performance.

Comic Books

Action_Comics_1.jpg Like Jazz and baseball, nothing is quite as an American an art form as the comic book. Like those other types of entertainment, comic books have their antecedents to other cultures and time periods. But in the 1930s, where so much of my scholarly interest resides as well, the superhero comic began in 1938. A quick look at films and television, the power of the larger than life character has never been more presnet in America culture. I'll admit it, Even before I knew what a cultural touchstone was, I loved comic books and still do. It is an excellent and dynamic form of storytelling and is a welcome respite from scholarly and professional writings. and hey, Batman is still cool.

Birding

puffin.jpg Or as my kids like to call me, I'm a bird nerd. The best description of birding I've heard though is that it has the power to turn an ordinary, even drab setting into  a fleeting moment of  beauty. I'll admit I've come to the birding community relatively recently, but that doesn't make it any less graftifying. Sometimes the best birding days are the ones where no new birds are seen or heard, but are only a few hours spent walking slowly through nature. Birding demands patience and quiet. Two things in short supply in today's world. I didn't take the picture of the puffin, but I did go off the coast of Maine to see them nest!
