Formative assessments through homework
I assigned homework to have them review what they had learned in class and see how much and what students were learning and what difficulties they had. I assigned review works from the textbook. I wrote assignments on the board before lessons started. They copied them on their check sheets. I also posted it on the school website. A student got a “genten” if he did not submit on time. He would have a conference after he got five gentens. The due dates were usually the next lesson days.
Formative assessments through a game
We played a math game to practice adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers for 21 minutes on November 14th and 35 minutes on November 15th. I wrote one hundred questions on small cards. Students were paired up to help with each other. Each student picked a card, on which a question was written. They did not know what the questions were when they picked because the cards was lying face down. They wrote and solved their questions on their notebooks. They were supposed to work on their own first. As soon as they got their answer, they would bring it to me to check their answer. If they got it right, they would get a point and pick another card. If they did not know what they did wrong, they could get help from their partners. They competed against other pairs as a group, but I also recorded their points individually.
