The OTS leads will facilitate group sessions by introducing the session’s topic and providing the women with the essential materials for each activity. The members will be encouraged to take control of each activity to tailor it to their own interests/creativity. Student leads will ensure that the activity is continuing as planned and within proper time limits, but will let the members dictate the main outcomes of each activity. The leaders will also close each session by reflecting on the day’s events and sharing any personal feelings about the group or sessions. During activities, the OTS leads will be switching amongst themselves between lead roles. For example one OTS lead may be in control of one group, while the other two leads support the OTS and assist her as needed.
The OTS leads are well versed in the Intentional Relationship Model and utilized the theories in this model to help facilitate therapeutic relationships and performance within the group. This model provides a guideline on the different therapeutic modes and use of therapeutic use of self to create an effective relationship with the member, which will ultimately enhance therapy and contribute to the member’s progress (Taylor, 2008). Strategies OTS leads will utilize are advocating, collaborating, empathizing, encouraging, instructing and problem solving during groups in order to provide therapeutic modes that best suit the context and environment of each activity. Throughout the sessions, the OTS leads will determine which mode is appropriate for each member/situation and alter their mode that may be most beneficial for the group member. It is also important the OTS leads use self-awareness when providing a therapeutic use of self in order to better areas of strength, weakness and limitations that each lead can capitalize on and or modify in order to create effective session interventions for group members.
