Guiding Principles For Group Design

The Model of Human Occupation according to Kielhofner 2008 was used when designing Club Discovery. MOHO emphasizes a client-centered approach that focuses on the individuals volition (interests, motivation), habituation (patterns and routines), and performance causation (physical and mental abilities of the individual). The group design focuses on the individuals interests (taken from surveys of last year participants), routines, and tailors the program to meet the members physical and mental abilities to avoid over fatigue within the group. The primary goal of the group is to increase these members quality of life by increasing social participation and overall wellness.

The Occupational Therapy Students will also utilize the Psycho-educational Approach to address higher-order concerns and facilitate long-term adjustment. The interventions of a psycho-educational as practiced by Fawzy (1995) will include health education, enhancement of problem-solving skills, stress management, and psychological support. The OT students will educate the members of Club Discovery on a variety of Health and Wellness techniques, including proper nutrition, stress reduction/relaxation management, physical fitness, and appropriate sleep patterns. The OT students will incorporate these educational facts within an activity to enhance participation and retention of the information. At the conclusion of the group, the students will also provide the members with a booklet to increase carry-over of the learned information.
