I think my knowledge of the IRM helped me decide what mode to use during different situations. I am still learning how to respond effectively in a way that does not need thought on how to but rather the ability to naturally respond and feel comfortable with my response. On the other hand, the knowledge of these different modes and the use of the IRM model has allowed me to decide and identify when something needed to change and to use a new mode to accommodate for the needed change. Although I am aware of all of the different modes, I still need to learn how to effectively use them.
In addition, problem solving was initially used in the group during the yoga session since some of the members were having difficulty with figuring out how to participate. I think the above incident has allowed me to identify when an incident occurs and will better allow me to know how to respond to similar critical incidents in the future. I will not have to think about which mode I will need to use, but I will in time and with experience hope to gain the ability to know what modes will work and how to respond when difficult or interesting situations happen. The critical incident has also helped me to learn that responding and acknowledging is beneficial to both myself and the group member and future clients I will interact with. I believe the clients need was understanding, support, empathizing and to be heard. I feel the group members and OTS Leads provided these needs to her appropriately.
I think from meeting after the group session if this incident were to occur again, I would respond with thanking the group member for sharing their response and bring them into the current activity and allow for them to discuss how they can use their concerns in the current group sessions to help with some of the difficulties they have been facing and introduce the activity to them and expand on what they can contribute to the group. Some other modes I could have picked to address this need may also be problem solving and giving the group member some information and advice on additional supports she would use to get through a difficult time. I think this experience has also helped me to learn what I identify as a critical incident and to help me understand why I felt uncomfortable and uncertain when I was presented with the above situation.
