Freshman Goals

My first year in college! What a new and exciting time. I am a direct admit to the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University, so I am already taking classes towards my BS in Computer Science. As a Cox Exploratory Scholar, I have to work 8-10 hours a week as a Peer Coach every semester. I am working 8-10 hours as an undergraduate instructor as well. I have to work harder than ever to succeed on my own this year. I have set these short and long term goals for myself to keep me focused.

Short-Term Goals

  • Do well in classes! Strive to get a 3.5 GPA, but don't beat yourself up if it is lower.

  • Manage time, realize the difference between work and play.

  • Apply for the undergraduate research opportunities provided by the direct admission to SOIC.

  • Join a club! Something fun, like the Harry Potter Society, and something valuable, like the Computer Science Club.

  • Attend Women In Computing meetings and conferences to learn about careers and meet women like me.

  • Discuss with my advisor to see which specialization I would like in my BS in Computer Science.

  • Start building a resume, record things I've done and are currently doing.

Long-Term Goals

  • Try to be in Undergraduate research each semester, to gain valuable skills and experience.

  • Apply for internships, attend career fairs every year.

  • Research job opportunities, discover what I would like to do after college.

  • Graduate with a 3.5 or higher, with a BS degree in Computer Science.

  • Have an overall fulfilling and excellent college career.
