Projects

The internship seminar involved various class projects to further our development as interns and students. In the fall, I partnered with Camille Smith to present on a social justice issue. We chose corporate feminism – it commodifies the social movement of feminism and ignores the struggles of women. Instead, corporate feminism focuses on applauding successful, (often) white upper class women who have the privilege to succeed in their career.

Leadership Profile: Nancy Gavilanes

In another assignment, we were tasked with interviewing a leader at our internship site. I chose to interview Nancy Gavilanes, my supervisor at Catholic Charities, because she exemplifies the qualities of effective leadership. We also formed a personal relationship throughout my internship in which she mentored me and gave me feedback on my performance. Nancy's passion for helping the immigrant community shines through in her work, and she appreciates people for what they contribute to the team. As a leader, she is always striving to improve and make the Immigration and Naturalization program more successful.

Asset Map Assignment

To further my understanding of asset-based community development, I created an asset map of my hometown, Brooklyn Park, MN. Some of the city's greatest assets are its beautiful, well-maintained public green spaces and its local residents such as students, artists, and senior citizens. Using the skills that these assets contribute to the community, I developed an action plan to improve environmental sustainability and reduce waste.
