Context:
The Story Pictures Assignment was created in CI 3750, Integrating Media and Technology Into The Classroom. It was made in January during Block I. This was an assignment that our entire class did under the instruction of Jeff Goodman.
Impact:
The Story Pictures Assignment integrates Language Arts with Computer and Technology skills. It allows students to understand and demonstrate their knowledge in Language Arts and Computer and Technology in a multitude of ways. Students have to put into sequence a series of five pictures. They also have to use their creativity to write a story that follows how they arranged the photos. Creative writing helps students improve their writing skills and determine the various elements throughout their story. In addition to this, many standards from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study are met. Standards met include the following:
Third Grade Language Arts
-Competency Goal 3
Objectives 3.01, 3.02, 3.06
-Competency Goal 4
Objectives 4.02, 4.07, 4.08, 4.09, 4.10
-Competency Goal 5
Objectives 5.01, 5.03, 5.06
Third Grade Computer and Technology Skills
-Competency Goal 1
Objectives 1.11, 1.13
-Competency Goal 2
Objectives 2.01, 2.02, 2.08
-Competency Goal 3
Objectives 3.03, 3.04
Alignment:
The following NETS-T Technology Standards are met for teachers through the Story Pictures Assignment:
Standard IV.A- Apply technology assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
For this assignment, students had a variety of ways to turn their project in to be graded. They were asked to save their stories in Microsoft Word. They could also print their story if they had access to a printer. By having modifications for this assignment, older students could email, print or save their work. Younger students were asked to arrange and write their own stories on a separate sheet of paper.
Standard IV.C- Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.
With this assignment, a thorough set of instructions is provided for the students and the teacher. I also provided them with a model of how the assignment should look when completed. There is also a rubric so the teacher and students know exactly how the assignment will be graded. The combination of the instructions, the model, and the rubric will allow everyone to know what to do, as well as how they are going to assessed.
Standard VI. D- Promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
Throughout this assignment, students and the teacher know to have rest and stretch breaks while at the computer. This allows students to safely use technology while at school. It also teaches them the importance of stretching and taking a break while using other technology resources at home or at school. Taking a break from the computer also allows the students to clear their mind so they can focus better on their assignment.
Standard VI. E- Facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
This standard was met by making sure all students had an equal opportunity to work on the computer for this assignment. Students were required to switch off turns at the computer. This allowed all of the students in the class to put the same amount of work in the assignment and equally practice their computer skills. After doing this in partners, both students should be able to do a similar assignment using the computer on their own.
Standard II. A- Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
This standard was met through the various modifications of this assignment I provided. Although it was meant for third graders, the modifications allow any grade to be able to do this assignment. With a few modifications, ESL students also have the ability to complete this task. Having modifications is essential today in the classroom. Everyone is able to complete the assignment without it being to easy or too difficult.
