Health Lesson Plan
Context:
During the Spring of 2007, I created this lesson plan as a requirement for Health Education in Elementary Schools. This assignment was under the advisement of Dr. Terri Mitchell.
Impact:
This health lesson plan is geared towards second grade students. It teaches students how they can assertively refuse an unwanted item or peer pressure. It not only tells students how to refuse unwanted items or peer pressure, but it also helps give them the confidence they need to refuse it.
Alignment:
This assignment meets the following NC Standards for Elementary Teachers:
Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living:
Indicator 1: Teachers understand the foundations of good health and help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
This lesson plan focuses on keeping students safe and helping students make the right decisions. By making good decisions, students will greatly benefit from a healthy lifestyle. If students are aware of the consequences of smoking and know how to turn away from smoking, they are creating a foundation of good health.
Indicator 2: Teachers are alert to major health issues related to children.
A major health concern for people of all ages today, especially children, is smoking. Children start smoking at very young ages, and it is important for them to know the consequences of smoking. Children have to be taught how to say no to smoking and other unwanted substances, which this lesson teaches. This lesson plan demonstrates that I am aware of this major health issue related to children.
Indicator 13: Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice skills that contribute to good health.
I know that is important for teachers to create opportunities for student development and practice skills that contribute to good health. With this lesson plan, I showed students how to say no to an unwanted substance, which will contribute to good health.
