Context:
The service learning assignment was created during CI 3110, Social Studies in the Elementary School during the Fall of 2007 under the advisement of Dr. Claire Mamola.
My service learning project was a school wide canned food drive at Gamewell Elementary School in Caldwell County.
Impact:
The canned food drive was an excellent opportunity for students to discover ways they can help out their community. Students were able to see the importance of being a responsible citizen by participating in a community service project and by seeing ways can they influence and impact their community.
Alignment:
The following NCDPI Standards for Elementary Teachers were met with the service learning project:
Standard 4, Indicator 11: This was met because the students were encouraged to be responsible citizens and members of society by asking them to bring in canned goods.
Standard 16, Indicator 7: This standard was met because the canned food drive encouraged student participation in a civic and volunteer activity.
Standard 16, Indicator 10: The canned food drive advocated for the rights and welfare of individual students. The canned goods collected in with this project will help underprivileged students get proper nourishment.
