# 66 Green CTSO Community Service or Classroom Projects

 

Our classes are participants in recycling plastics, cans, and paper products.  All foam products used during our training exercises are biodegradable.  We do not burn any treated or painted wood products for live fire training.  Recycled wood pallets and older hay and straw are used for the production of fire and smoke.

Artifact #67 - Green Competencies

1.  Students must be able to Identify basic HazMat standards and resources for handling an incident.

2.  Students will learn to properly clean hazardous materials in the case of a spill -on land or water.

3.  Students will participate in a drill in the school's nearby creek, Black Run, where a hazmat spill will be simulated.

4.  Students will be able to properly dispose of hazardous materials.

5.  Students will be involved in planting trees on school property and will understand the need for ripairian buffers to prevent hazarous waste issues.

6.  Students will understand the importance of recycling materials and will take part in several recycling efforts in the classroom.

Artifact 68 - 1 lesson plan that promotes sustainability

#68 - Promoting sustainability through hazardous materials awareness and training.

Fire and Rescue students learn about hazardous materials and their effect on the environment.  They also learn about the importance of protecting the environment by proper clean-up during a hazardous material spill.  Fire and Rescue students become HAZMAT certified.  See attached lesson plan.

Artifact 69 - document classroom practices that support sustainability

#69 - Sustainability Practices

1.  Fire and Rescue students recycle all cans, bottles, and paper products on a bi-weekly basis.

2.  Each year, Fire and Rescue students go to a nearby creek to practice skills in containing hazardous materials that might spill into groundwater.   See attached lessons and photos.

3.  Students are taught that we do not burn any treated or painted wood products for live fire training.

4.  To produce fire and smoke for training exercises, students use recycled wood pallets.
