Indicator 8a

Artifact 54 - 1 example of an interdisciplinary/collaborative lesson plan or project

1.  Each year, we do a training exercise with the Nursing class on Accident Scene/Patient Assessment.  This is particularly beneficial for the Fire and Rescue students who are predominantly male and have to assess the Nursing students who are predominantly female.  (see attached photos 151-178).

2.  We also do a Mass Casualty scene with Criminal Justice students and learn to work side-by-side with Law Enforcement which is extremely important due a large accident/casualty scene.  (see photos 333-359)

Artifact 55 - examples of applications for or awards, grants, recognitions received

1.  MTC's Fire and Rescue program received a $5000 Heritage Grant from Fireman's Fund Insurance.  This grant was awarded at MTC's Open House on November 3, 2009.  Photos are attached.  With these funds. the Fire and Rescue program will purchase 33 training videos that will provide Fire and Rescue students with the latest in training techniques.  The Rockingham County Fire and Rescue Department also plans to use these same training videos.

2.  MTC Fire and Rescue graduate, David Huddle, wins Life-Saving Award from Woodmen of the World.  David Huddle graduated from the Fire and Rescue Program in June 2007 and was hired as a Career Firefighter by Rockingham County Fire and Rescue.  Within two years, on his way to answer a call, David found himself in a life-saving situation.  He was recognized by this group for pulling a man from a burning house, saving his life.  See attached newspaper article.

3.  For the last three years, MTC Fire and Rescue students have taken first place at SkillsUSA State Conference and then Second or Third place in SkillsUSA National Conference in Firefighting, and First Aid/CPR.

Artifact 56 - examples of instructional technology adding rigor and relevance to classroom instruc.

Artifact #56 - Technology

Fire and Rescue students use a variety of equipment that requires a high level of expertise.  They are trained to use a thermal imaging camera (TIC) as they go through a fire. The devices are also critical in determining the fluid levels in tanks.  A thermal imaging camera is an expensive piece of technology.  There are many fire departments who cannot afford to purchase one.

Students also use automated exteranl defibrillators (AED's) and learn proper use of these external defribillators the first year of class in CPR and further that training in the second year during their EMT-B course.  Proper use is critical as it can mean the difference between life and death.

Another life-saving piece of technology that students use in training are the personal alert safety stystem (PASS) alarms worn by all fire fighters entering a hazardous environment.  These devices will alarm due to the lack of movement of a fire fighter or may be activated by the fire fighter in case of an emergency.  This will cause a loud intermittent sound to signal their location in a fire.
