Artifact 20 - 2 lesson plans with STEM competencies highlighted

Artifact #20 - STEM Competencies

In Fire and Rescue, we highlight STEM competencies throughout the year.  Below is a brief description of  a few sample lesson plans.

  1. Science:
    1. Science- Fire Behavior – Chapter 3 of our Firefighter I text covers physical and chemical changes of matter related to fire.  We discuss heat energy and temperature and the chemical reaction involved in the combustion process.
    2. Science – Environmental Emergencies – Chapter 22 covers the skills to provide emergency medical care for a patient with exposure to cold, heat, near-drowning and other environmental emergencies.  All involve understanding body temperatures and chemical and physical reactions.
  2. Technology:
    1. We learn to use the latest in fire fighting equipment; two examples include a thermal imaging camera and defibrillator.
  3. Engineering:
    1. We discuss and then go out to a nearby creek to dam a creek (see attached handout) then discuss diking and diverting in the case of a hazardous material liquid release.
  4. Mathematics:
    1. In Chapter 26, of Module 5, we discuss “Soft Tissue Injuries”.   The students must learn about injuries to the soft tissues of the body.  They must calculate percentages.  They must identify the depth and degree of burns and the percentage of body area burned.
