Artifact 34 - examples of how career pathways and dual credit opp. are communicated with students

1.  We host 5th grade students from all elementary schools in Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County in October.  During each 'Career Days Field Trip', each class will visit four programs at MTC.  (see attached photos)  Our students act as hosts and tour guides and share information with these students as to possible career pathways.

2. We also traveled to Pleasant Valley Elementary School for their Career Days.

3. For older students, we host a 7th, 9th and 10th grade Visitation Days.  These events are similar to our 5th grade tours but Fire and Rescue students are able to provide more detailed information on what is needed to register for this class, what the possible career pathways are, and information about post-secondary credit.

4.  Our school counselor went out to high schools last year during registration time and set up a Fire and Rescue display in the lunchrooms of all four high schools.  Two of our graduates-who are now employed by Rockingham County Fire and Rescue- took part in the displays and presentations.

5.  We have placed Massanutten Technical Center Fire and Rescue posters (sample attached) in all area fire houses.  Quite often, children of the volunteers accompany their parents to the fire house.

6.  MTC holds an Annual Community Open House for parents and middle school and elementary students.  They average 300+ attendees.  We always set up a fire engine outside and that attracts parents and students and we are able to provide them information.

Artifact 35 - document collaboration w/ school counselors/career coaches on academic & career plans

Artifact # 35 - School Counselor collaboration

Each Spring, the School Counselors works with all students to create a resume and a Career Portfolio.    This career portfolio is something each MTC graduate can take with them when they apply for jobs.  The Career Portfolio is a 3-ring binder that includes the student resume, a student's work philosophy, and copies of any certifications or commendations the student may have received throughout the year.  Work has not yet begun on this year's Career Portfolios.  Counselor does have available samples of past portfolios.
