Artifact #1 - Program Description

This program teaches students education in fire suppression, hazardous materials and emergency care for the sick and injured persons.  Upon successful completion of this two year program students will have the opportunity to hold the following certifications:

First year

  • CPR, American Heart Association (AHA)
  • First Aid, AHA
  • Fire Fighter I, Virginia Department of Fire Programs (DFP)
  • Hazardous Materials Operations Level, DFP

Second Year

  • Firefighter II, DFP
  • Emergency Medical Technician – Basic, Virginia Department of Health (VDH)

Over these two years students are going to receive extensive training on safety, building construction, various different types of fire hoses and fire streams used in the suppression of fires.  Students will also learn about public education and how to manage a hazardous materials emergency while minimizing the environmental impact.

Upon completion of this program students have the possibility of being job ready.  This history of this program has already proven this point when two graduates were hired by Rockingham County Fire & Rescue department, one is working in Augusta County Fire Service, and another is working full-time for a private ambulance service.  Also, all second year students are volunteering with fire & rescue agencies in the region.

Our neighboring county, Shenandoah County, has sent a member of their Board of Supervisors to observe our program.  They were so impressed by what they heard about the program, they hope to use MTC's Fire and Rescue program as  a model to start a similar program at Triplett Tech.
