Project 3 Wiki
Group Wiki
- Partners: Mike Logan and Greg Krupa
Project Requirements
What
To collaboratively make a class wiki for this class and then to design an authentic wiki project for your own elementary class.
Why
Wiki tools are versatile. They can be anything and do almost anything! It all depends on your initiation and your thoughtful integration.
How
This will be a group project. The Project consists of two parts.
Part I You will work in groups and collaboratively complete a class wiki on Web 2.0. Each group will
collaboratively write one page. Required elements for this page are as follows: 1) A one-sentence definition (understanding/perspectives/beliefs/opinions are also fine) on
Web 2.0 by each group member;
2) One superb example of educational uses of these new tools on Web 2.0. These can be based on your own thoughts or out of resources you find online (make sure to acknowledge the resources);
3) A collection of resources (citations, references, links on your topic/theme of the Web 2.0 technology you are focusing on, so you can use it in teaching later;
4) A presentation to the class on what you accomplished, and how you accomplished it.
Part II Each group will collaboratively create one authentic wiki (template) for an elementary class or a school. Required elements are as follows:
1) A homepage for the wiki, with a title of the wiki, the purpose/task of the wiki, and an image(s).
2) An additional 2 to 4 pages as coherent components of the wiki
3) Use Manage Wiki to make the wiki Public/Protected/Private
4) Use Manage Wiki to invite at least 3 people as your wiki members.
My Wiki here
You can use any of the open resources of your preference to host your wiki. Here are a few popular tools:
• http://www.wetpaint.com
• http://pbwiki.org
• http://www.wikispaces.com
You can find good examples of wikis used in elementary/middles schools through searching Internet but here is a rich one: http://educationalwikis.wikispaces.com/
Not enough? More examples here focusing on different uses

Evaluation/Rubric
The group grade will be the grade for each individual in that group. Every member of the group needs to contribute for a good group grade.
Components Points

2. The design of wiki for your own future class/school 2

Total 5
1) Creators/Authors of the Media Project.
- Alaina Latella, Mike Logan, and Greg Krupa.
2) Indentified Grade(s) Level
- Grade 3
3) Brief Introduction of the media project – What is the value of using this type of media project in education? What specific literacy issues will this media project help address? What impact on student learning do you foresee occurring with the use of this media project in the classroom setting? What ethical or social issues might be of concern? Will this media project encourage use of problem solving skills by the learner?
- This program is a great way to keep the class all on the same page. The student's and their guardians can all be a part of the site and stay up-to-date on everything going on in class. These sites can also be used to help teach the class and help them with their work. Any subject can be incorporated into these wikis which allows these projects to be used with most lessons. Wikis use technology to enhance literacy instruction and can address the literacy needs of emergent and early readers. I think these would help the students look at learning a different way being able to use the computer and do activities online. I believe this would keep their interest and make is so they did not realize they were learning as much. Learning using these programs are generally solo activities so the children would not get as much social interaction. The wikis can be made to encourage problem solving skills, however, the wiki that I created does not.
4) Specifically identify one or two goals/objectives
- SWBAT:
- identify the 8 different planets on our solar system.
- describe the rotation of the planets around the sun.
5) Subject matter – What is (are) the subject matter(s)? Does integration of subject matters take place? How has this media project addressed cultural responsiveness teaching? (See this document for help in this area http://education.cortland.edu/~studentteach/forms/diversity_assignment.pdf )
- My wiki incorporates some science subject matter. I did not plan for ant integration of other subject matters but something else could easily be incorporated. This lesson should have been planned to build upon some of the subject matter that the students have learned in the past years. This would allow for me to teach using scaffolding.
6) What learning styles will most likely be attracted to this media creation? (This might be a nice refresher for you on learning styles, use this only as a guide. http://nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/styles.html)
- These lessons would incorporate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. The planetarium would be a great visual tool and learning about the rotation around the sun is a kinesthetic and visual based lesson. Many of these lessons are based on incorporating auditory learning styles.
7) What instructional strategies have been utilized? (This list is somewhat exhaustive and here are a couple sites to use as guides. http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/alpha.html
or http://glossary.plasmalink.com/glossary.html
- Some of the learning strategies that would be incorporated in this science unit are brainstorming, categorizing, computer assisted instruction, concept attainment and formation, demonstrations, K-W-L charts, learning centers, lecture, listen and visualize, model building, problem solving, research projects, scaffolding, simulations, and visual imaging.
8) Is this a self-paced or teacher-directed media project?
- This would be a more teacher-directed project, however, some components of the project can be geared for the students to complete outside of class.
9) Would an individual or group use this media project?
- These projects will be more group projects because the students would mostly be using learning centers and doing class activities.
10) What type of learning assessment will be used? Has learning transfer been thought about in your media creation and if yes how? (There are many articles on transfer of learning here is one to get you started. http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/learning/transfer.html
- The assessment will be the collection and grading of the students science journals and a unit test. I think that learning transfer will be present because the students will take their problem solving skills from one activity and apply them to the others in the unit.
