Project 1 MS Office

Project 1 MS Word

Media Project #1 MS Office: Word & Publisher

What

You will create one MS Word product (for instance, word acrostic, educational handouts with border, shading or fill effect) and one MS Publisher product (for instance, a flier, a poster, a sign, a brochure or a calendar) that can be used in class/school activities. You are encouraged to create multiple products but only two products are required – one using MS Word and one using MS Publisher.

Why

Microsoft Word is an immensely capable application. In addition to its word-processing capabilities, you can use special features of MS Word to enhance your classroom/school activities.

Although MS Word is powerful, it is less suited for creating desktop publishing documents that require precise layout control and object formatting. Microsoft Publisher is a very popular program that teachers use to create flyers, posters, newsletters, cards, labels, signs, and other documents that help organize the classroom. Being able to use the desktop publishing program Microsoft Publisher will enable you to create eye-catching calendars, newsletters, flyers, brochures and programs.

Project Ideas

The requirement for each of the two products: it needs to be related to a classroom activity or a school event.

Annotation

1) Creators/Authors of the Media Project.

2) Indentified Grade(s) Level

   -Grade 2

3) Brief Introduction of the media project – What is the value of using this type of media project in education? What specific literacy issues will this media project help address? What impact on student learning do you foresee occurring with the use of this media project in the classroom setting? What ethical or social issues might be of concern? Will this media project encourage use of problem solving skills by the learner?

   - This media project was to create an acrostic using Microsoft Word and then create another project using Microsoft Publisher.  These media projects work very well for documents but, in my opinion, work best for making classroom newsletters.  Publisher has ready-made templates that make writing a newsletter extremely easy.

4) Specifically identify one or two goals/objectives:

   - The students will create a word acrostic "Abraham Lincoln" writing sentences detailing facts about him.

5) Subject matter – What is (are) the subject matter(s)? Does integration of subject matters take place? How has this media project addressed cultural responsiveness teaching? (See this document for help in this area http://education.cortland.edu/~studentteach/forms/diversity_assignment.pdf )

   - These programs can be used for ELA, History, or Science.  Students can write papers and labs using the programs.  Math would be a very difficult subject to use Microsoft Word or Publisher with because it has limited operations and requires in depth knowledge of the program to make it work.  Integration could take place.  For example, students could write an essay for ELA on a history topic.

6) What learning styles will most likely be attracted to this media creation? (This might be a nice refresher for you on learning styles, use this only as a guide. http://nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/styles.html)

   - This creation will help students that best learn visually considering there is no sound attached and it is not a hand on project.  It is simply to read and created to capture the attention of one's eye.

7) What instructional strategies have been utilized? (This list is somewhat exhaustive and here are a couple sites to use as guides. http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/alpha.html

or http://glossary.plasmalink.com/glossary.html

   - The instructional strategies used are brainstorming, the decision-making process, working with words, and writing to inform.

8) Is this a self-paced or teacher-directed media project?

   - This project could either be self-paced or teacher-directed.  The teacher could give the assignment as a take home assignment or have the students complete the project in class.

9) Would an individual or group use this media project?

   - For the name acrostic, generally, it would be an individual project.  However, this could be a group project if the group was given a name or a topic and was told to come up with sentences or words describing the topic.

10) What type of learning assessment will be used? Has learning transfer been thought about in your media creation and if yes how? (There are many articles on transfer of learning here is one to get you started. http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/learning/transfer.html

   - The acrostic would be collected as assessment.  There could be a transfer of learning about how to describe things in a better way.  It teaches very good descriptive words.
