Resident Assistant

In November of 2013, I was accepted to be a Resident Assistant for the upcoming Spring 2014 semester. After an extensive, eight day training session, I began my new position on the third floor of Hilliard Hall, a building that is a part of the First Year Residential Experience program.

As a member of the Office of Residential Life and Judicial Affairs staff, I work to create a space within my residence hall that develops a sense of welcoming community for First Year students. This position involves heavy, active use of interpersonal skills, as the role of the RA is to interact with and assist in the developmen of a wide variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Essentially, the RA serves their residents and their Residence Director supervisor as an organizer, administrator, programmer, disciplinarian, and role model.

My location for the 2014-2015 academic year was in Holmes Hall, another area that is entirely dedicated to the First Year Residential Experience Program. I worked with one other Resident Assistant and a faculty associate as the Pilot Floor that pioneered a new programming model to engage our students with fun events that allowed aspects of the Integrative Core Curriculum of the college to be woven into them. Our events were always successfully planned, organized and executed.
