Service Learning Rationale
Context: This service learning project was created fall 2007 in CI 3110 under the direction of Dr. Allen Bryant.
The purpose of this project was to instilled the value of helping communities and volunteer work in the students as well as teachers and parents.
Impact: The service learning project helped to create the value of service work to each student that participate. The project helped the students look around at their surroundings and help determine what they can do to make it a better place. It showed how volunteer work can benefit everyone and created better citizens.
Alignment:
Standard 16: Elementary teachers develop as leaders in their schools and communities by staying informed about educational policy issues and supporting professional development. Elementary teachers participate in co-curricular activities, provide leadership in student and curriculum involvement, and connect these activities to the development of citizenship ideals in their students.
Indicator 1: This indicator was met by participating in a service learning project that benefited a nearby hospital.
Indicator 5: Before the service learning could occur, approval from the administrators were required. The dictated what could and could not be done.
Indicator 7: This was met by encouraging the students to help raise money to donate to a local organization and write considerate cards that will brighten a young child's day.
