Math Activities

NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 9: Elementary teachers understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation as the foundation for the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Indicator: Indicator 1: Elementary teachers develop instruction in problem solving that enable all students to:
Detail: Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving;
Detail: Solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts;
Detail: Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems;
Indicator: Indicator 5: Teachers develop instruction in representation that enables all students to:
Detail: Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas;
Detail: Use representations to model and interpret physical, social, and mathematical phenomena

Context:

I taught these math activities in Mrs. Tallent’s second grade class, during my students teaching at North Brook Elementary.  Math is a huge part of our day and these activities are samples of some of the things that we have done.

Impact:

This lesson impacted my students by showing them fun ways to learn about math.  It has also shown them that there is more to math than just adding and subtracting numbers.  These lessons meet math NCSCOS standards: 1.01 Develop number sense for whole numbers through 999 and1.06 Define and recognize odd and even numbers.

Alignment:

I have met standard 9 indicator 1 by giving the students word problems to solve.  I have also met it by having them to tell me different ways they can solve math problems using manipulatives.

I have met standard 9 indicator 5 by having the students create graphs that represent data collected in class.  I have also met it by using a variety of representations to model the concept of even and odd.
