Safety

NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.
Indicator: Indicator 4: Teachers model and communicate appropriate safety behaviors.

Context:

I taught this bus safety lesson in Mrs. Tallent’s second grade class at North Brook elementary school.  I created it as a requirement of the school to teach bus safety during the first weeks of school.

Impact:

This lesson impacted the students by preparing them to ride a bus safely.  We read two books about buses and discussed why rules on the bus are so important.  Next, students generated rules with my guidance that should be followed on the bus at all times.  This lesson was important for all students even if they are regularly a car rider because we will be going on several field trips this year. The students need to know how to be safe while we get there.

Alignment:

I have met Standard 17 indicator 4 by communicating appropriate safety behaviors on the bus.
