Context:

I did this service learning project to meet the requirements for my CI 3110 class.  I did it with April Trivette's third grade class at Mountain View Elementary School.  First, my partners and I contacted a school that needed help.  Next we wrote letter home to the parents and presented the project to our classes.  We wrote letters to the students at Buladean Elementary School in hopes that they would write us back.

Impact

This project impacted my students by helping them to realize that not everyone has a lot of things in this world.  When we were discussing it, those who were "well off" were surprised that the school did not have the same things that we did at Mountain View.  The students also reinforced their friendly letter writing skills with this project.  We talked about how you open and end the letter.  I really wish that the principal or the students had written some kind of thank you note so, that the students would know that they appreciated what they had done.  However this did give us the chance to talk about how some people do not always say thank you when they should but that does not mean you should not help them.  It is our duty as a citizen to help others in need.

Through this project the students have met third grade Social Studies NCSCOS,

1.01 Identify and demonstrate characteristics of responsible citizenship and explain how citizen participation can impact changes within a community.

1.03 Identify and explain the importance of civic responsibility, including but not limited to, obeying laws and voting.

Alignment:

I have met standard 16 indicator 3 by writing a letter home to the parents about the service learning project.

I have met standard 16 indicator 7 by encouraging the students to bring in supplies and having every student write a letter to another student at Buladean Elementary.
