Cultural Presentation

Here is my Power Point, class handout, and rational.
NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 15: Elementary teachers encourage underrepresented groups to engage in the schooling process, especially math and science.
Indicator: Indicator 1: Teachers use a variety of strategies to encourage underrepresented groups to engage in the schooling process, especially math and science. They:
Detail: Utilize community resources
Detail: Use relevant and real-world applications that interest a diverse population

Context:

I presented this power point on Appalachian Culture to my CI 3000 Learner Diversity Class. Deborah Hinshelwood and I created the Power Point and Class hand out together.

Impact:

This project impacted me in a positive way.  It has helped me to see some of the stereotypes that people have of the Appalachian people.  I will be very sensitive to this in my classroom and make sure to implement the best classroom practices that are on our power point.  Doing this project also helped me to understand the Appalachian people better and to see the wonderful contributions that they have given to our society such as their music, storytelling, and crafts.

Alignment:

I have met standard 15 indicator 1 by showing in my power point that I have ways to make rural students feel welcomed and encouraged in my classroom.  The literature list is a way for me to help interest the Appalachian students in reading in my classroom.
