5 E Lesson Plan

Yellow Flower (Lg.)

Growing Lima Beans Rationale

Context:

The purpose of this lesson plan is for the students to comprehend the process that occurs when a seed becomes a plant. It follows the curriculum set down in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for the third grade. I created this lesson as a requirement for my science course during my Block II semester at Appalachian State University. The students being taught are to label the parts of a plant, examine a seed up close, know how a seed becomes a plant, and observe the actual growth of a plant.

Impact:

The students were hands-on during this lesson as they grew their own plants and dissected a seed. Their goals were to be able to label the parts of a plant and comprehend the process that goes into growing a seed to an adult plant.

Alignment:

I met these standards by teaching my lesson plan on plant growth. I introduced the concepts that go into bringing a seed to an adult plant. I taught the characteristics and parts of a plant and the students completed an assessment that showed they correctly knew these characteristics. I described the cycle of a plant life as well as the cycle that exists between animals and plants.
