ETS Major Field Tests

Available for Review Till March 25

Link to ETS Website: Major Field Tests

Curious about just what types of questions and content a national field test in your area would contain? Considering the possibility of using national field tests as part of your program assessment in the future?  If so, you are in luck...through March 25!  The Assessment Steering Committee has ordered review copies of all available tests from Educational Testing Service (ETS), the same group that runs the SAT.

ETS regulations cite that all tests must be kept locked at all times and within sight of the person who ordered the exams. Because of these requirements, these Major Field Tests will be available for review each Thursday at 3 pm in 321 Turley (Sound familiar?!) OR by appointment through Nancy Parks, x4990. Nancy does, she reminds faculty, make "house calls" and can bring the tests to faculty offices if that's more convenient for them.

The exams are available for review until March 25, at which time they must be returned via certified mail to ETS. If you know you would like to look at the tests, but won't have time before March 25, please contact Nancy Parks to let her know when you would be available.  (We can re-order the tests in the future.)

Currently, several programs in math and science administer ETS Major Field Tests to graduating seniors as a part of their program assessment (see next article in this newsletter.) The results are broken down by subdiscipline, and can provide useful information regarding the proficiencies of our graduates as compared to those nationwide. The following tests are available for review by program area faculty:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Criminal Justice
  • Economics
  • History
  • Literature in English
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physics
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Sociology BiologyMathematics
  • Chemistry

Business Majors

  • Associate Degree in Business
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Please confer with your colleagues and consider scheduling a time to review the Major Field Test for your program.

Major Field Test Dates, Spring 2009

ETS Major Field Tests will be given to graduating seniors in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Mathematics this spring on Thursday and Friday afternoon April 30th and May 1st, 2009.  The tests will be offered to students in the Advising Center, Compass Testing Lab (321 Turley Center), proctored by Nancy Parks or other members of the Assessment Steering Committee.

If any additional programs would like to offer the Major Field Tests this spring, please contact Erica Harvey and we will be happy to make arrangements to purchase and proctor the exams for you.  We will need to know the names of the students who will be taking the exams, and also what date/time they will be taking the tests.
