The Revised Course Sequence  (updated 2016)

The revised program consists of four major interwoven and interdependent strands or components: Courses, Mentoring Group, ePortfolio, and In-service Master’s Research Paper or Project requirements.

The Frostburg State University Graduate Literacy Education Program has a new required course sequence:

Professional Education Core (9 credits)

EDUC 603 Principles and Practices of Research

EDUC 606 Development Theory and Experiential Growth

CUIN 654  Cultural and Technological Awareness in the Context of Global Education

Literacy Concentration Core (21 credits)

REED 540  Children’s Literature

REED 610 Foundations of Teaching Reading

REED 617 Teaching Reading in the Content Areas

REED 620 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Difficulties

REED 625 New Literacies: Integrating 21st Century Skills

REED 695 The Reading Clinic Practicum (two semesters)

Capstone Requirements (3 credits, with an option of 3 additional credits)

REED 700 Master’s Research Paper or Project. (Literacy Capstone)

  • Optional:  EDUC 710 Thesis or 6-credit option with advisor approval

One Elective: Required (3 credits)

Elective (3 credits) (A list of suggested electives is available from the program coordinator.)

The student begins with REED 610 and progresses through the course sequence. However, the courses are not the program. They are ancillary to the program. Each course is viewed as a component of the program addressing topics that will ultimately be used for the student's portfolio, the development of the in-service, and will certainly be discussed in the Mentoring Groups.
