Observations

Supervisor Obsevations

All candidates will be observed teaching by a University Supervisor in the three field experiences.  Internship I candidates are observed a minimum of two (2) times, formally, and Internship II candidates are observed a minimum of four (4) times, formally.

Mentors and Supervisors conduct the same number of formal observiations per internship and will want to coordinate these observations so they do not overlap.  It is preferable that formal observations are spread out over the internship time.  Capturing the intern's performance/ability at the beginning of the internship and again at the end is the optimal timeline.  Candidates do not "have to be observed" formally during their unit, but if it is possible, it is helpful to the mentor and supervisor as they will be scoring the unit.

Formal Observations:  Candidates should plan using the long form lesson plan template on TS and submit the plan to the supervisor prior to their visit. Supervisors will coordinate with the candidate and the Mentor Teacher to schedule each observation at an appropriate time and day. Supervisors will meet with the candidate following the observation to discuss the candidate’s performance and to share the written documentation of the observations. Supervisors should plan to use the appropriate observation form for each field experience.  While the number of observations may vary for each field experience, candidates should expect that the supervisor will make a “hello visit” at the beginning of the experience. Supervisors are also involved, along with the Intern and Mentor Teacher, in the Final Evaluation at the end of Internship I and the Midpoint and Final Evaluations in Internship II.  Candidates should communicate regularly with their University Supervisor via phone and email.

Fromal observations must be completed on the Intern Observation Form via Taskstream.  Downloadable copies of these completed forms should be given to the candidate and to the University Supervisor and can be used as evidence during the Midpoint and/or Final Evaluation process.

Mentor Observations

All candidates will be observed by their mentor teacher and will receive feedback on daily, ongoing basis. Mentors are encouraged to regularly provide written feedback based on their observation of intern teaching.
