Student Learning Outcomes

Goal 1: Music Theory: Music educators have a broad and comprehensive understanding of the materials and procedures of common practice era and post-tonal music. 

1.A: Students will read, identify, and write elements of music notation, melody, and rhythm. 

1.B: Students will analyze the form and harmonic content of music. 

1.C: Students will harmonize melodies and bass lines according to specified harmonic conventions. 

1.D: Students will sing music at sight. 

1.E: Students will notate melodies, harmonies, and rhythms from dictation. 

Goal 2: History, Literature, and Culture: Music educators have a broad and comprehensive understanding of music history and culture. 

2.A: Identify major composers and the qualities of music associated with a particular style or period. 

2.B: Discuss social, political, or other world influences that affect characteristics of the music associated with a particular style or period. 

2.C: Identify stylistic characteristics, instrumentation, and context of traditional music from various world cultures. 

Goal 3: Performance Techniques: Music Educators have a broad and comprehensive understanding of performance techniques and solo repertoire. 

3.A: Demonstrate technical proficiency, musicianship, and artistic interpretation of musical works through performance on their primary instrument/voice. 

3.B: Students will demonstrate techniques for performing on secondary brass, percussion, string, and woodwind instruments. 

Goal 4: Composing, Arranging, and Improvising: Music educators have a broad and comprehensive understanding of techniques for composing, arranging, and improvising. 

4.A: Arrange and orchestrate music for a variety of ensembles, demonstrating both musical knowledge and awareness of range, tone color, and function of each instrument or voice in the ensemble. 

Goal 5: Conducting and Repertoire: Music educators have a broad and comprehensive understanding of conducting techniques, rehearsal techniques, and repertoire for school ensembles. 

5.A: Students will demonstrate technically accurate and expressive conducting skills. 

5.B: Students will select appropriate repertoire for school ensembles. 

Goal 6: Music Pedagogy: Music educators have a broad and comprehensive understanding of music methodologies.

6.A: Candidates explain critical concepts and principles of learner development to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

6.B: Candidates apply critical concepts and principles of learning differences to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

6.C: Candidates apply critical concepts and principles of creating safe and supportive learning environments to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

6.D: Candidates explain central concepts of their content area. 

6.E: Candidates demonstrate plans for assessment to provide equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students. 

6.F: Candidates demonstrate plans for instruction to provide equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students. 

6.G: Candidates utilize a variety of instructional strategies to provide equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students. 

6.H: Candidates will model and apply national or state approved technology standards to engage and improve learning for all students. 

6.I: Candidates engage in professional learning and act ethically to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

6.J: Candidates take responsibility for student learning and collaborate with others to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families.
