Student Learning Outcomes

Goal 1. English majors will write effectively for specific purposes and audiences.

1.A Students will develop a clear purpose in their writing.

1.B Students will fulfill purpose in the paper.

1.C Students will present clear rationale for why the paper should be written.

1.D Students will organize their writing appropriate to the genre attempted. 

1.E Students will use discourse conventions appropriate to the chosen genre.

1.F Students will use quotations accurately and appropriately.

1.H Students' papers present no problems in the handling of politics, culture, gender, race and class as appropriate for academic discourse writing.

1.I Students will document sources properly.

1.J Students will demonstrate sound usage and grammar and produce writing free of surface error.

Goal 2. English majors will analyze, interpret, and assess the aesthetic, argumentative, and/or ethical value of information.

2.A Students will attempt an application or inquiry, etc. that moves beyond mere repetition of sources.

2.B Students will support claims of evidence appropriate to the type of paper being written.

2.C Students will organize their writing, demonstrating an ability to integrate and connect concepts to create unified arguments.

Goal 3. English majors will effectively identify appropriate source materials for specific purposes and audiences.

3.A Students will attempt an application or inquiry, etc. that moves beyond mere repetition of sources.

3.B Students will select and use sources appropriate to the genre, demonstrating an awareness of recent scholarship on the topic.

3.C Students will demonstrate critical attention to the quality of secondary sources.

3.D Students recognize the theoretical or methodological framework within which they are working.

Goal 4. English majors will use computer-based and web-based technologies effectively, appropriately, and ethically for a variety of audiences and purposes. 

4.A Student evinces facility with standard text-production and management technologies (e.g., word processing, formatting, printing).

4.E Student evinces critical discernment in use of the Web as an information resource or research tool.

Goal 5. English majors will direct writing and reading beyond the classroom, for example, in the workplace, for personal development, or for civic involvement.

5.C Student understands and accepts the relationship between client and writer that prevails in professional writing situations.

5.D Student contributes effectively to problem-solving when issues requiring flexibility and creativity arise.

5.E Student functions well in a teamwork environment when appropriate.
