Problem:
Our mainstream education is hidden within a curriculum, this serves as the status quo. It fits into the system but it relinquishes the consent for penetration on knowledge.
Goals to Be Accomplished:
-To expose deficiencies in this mainstream education
-to promote liberating education
Critiques of Banking Concept:
-The existing knowledge that is being fed to them makes students accept things as they are -not allowing them to have the want to seek change. Some of the things which could demystify our existence are hidden from the students. This leads students to not develop critical consciousness, which makes students refrain from struggling against the oppression that they are lead towards, blindly.
BANKING CONCEPT OF EDUCATION
-Teachers lecturing to students while the information told to them is only being recorded, memorized, and repeated, instead of the information actually being digested by the student and perceiving the true contents on what that information means.
-Students become receptacle/containers that are just filled with information.
-Education becomes an act of depositing where teachers don't communicate with their subjects.
- "The Banking Concept of Education, is the scope of action allowed to the students which extends only as far as receiving, filling, and storing the deposits."
-This methods supports the lack of creativity, transformation, and knowledge in this misguided system.
-Knowledge is a gift because you are educated next to those who know nothing.
-Education has a student teacher contradiction which the banking concept stimulates. Students in reality educate the teacher yet this method of education makes students and teachers believe that:
-Freire believes the more students work on storing information rather than developing the critical consciousness of that knowledge and becoming transformers of that world
-Banking Concept of Education is to minimize the students creative power and to influence the oppressors that do not want to see the world revealed or transformed
-The oppressors who enforce the Banking Concept of Education, see their subjects as "incompetent and lazy folk" to its own patterns by changing their way of thinking and analyzing.
Problem-Posing Education
-changes the teacher-student relationship
-involves dialectical dialogue
-both teachers and students are learner and teachers to each other simultaneously
-teachers and students create and exchange knowledge
-the pedagogy is based on the realities of the oppressed
-pictures are used to encourage dialogue
-words are structured in order to contextualize them in the social and political setting
-purpose of dialogue in education: conscientzation of political literacy ->by having both teachers and students demystifying the current reality
-through dialogue the oppressed critically view the world in a different perspective -causing the want to have change
--------These influences of Problem-Posing would generally lead to the culture of silence to be challenged by the implications of the subjects--------
