Box Project Check List

We chose to use bench mark (B) under the “people in societies” category. The first benchmark requires you to analyze the consequences of oppression and conflict between cultures. We chose this benchmark because it interests us and allows us to speak of the consequences of the holocaust on the Jewish.

The concept we will use is the effects of the holocaust on the Jewish culture. This topic entails what happened at the concentration camps and how Jewish people feel now in regard to the topic. It also entails how their political and economic systems changed after the holocaust and how they migrated and moved after the holocaust. The point or reason for doing this would be to promote peace and attempt to rid the world of racism and prejudice.

The concept and benchmark we have chosen involves the holocaust during World War II. The holocaust involved the conflict between the Jewish and the Nazis. During this time the Jewish were segregated and killed, most of the Jewish population in the world. This occurred during a six year time span (1939 – 1945). Most of the events that affect the Jewish occurred in concentration and execution camps around the world, mainly in Europe. The Jewish during this time also had to move to segregation free countries to escape oppression and concentration/execution camps. After the war they moved to their homeland (Israel) and many stayed in countries such as the United States, Britain and Canada. This is important because it shows the dark and negative consequences of oppression, and because many people lost their lives for no good reason. This relate to the project by trying to convey peace and to oppose oppression of all types in the world.

Descriptive Essay

The consequences of oppression have never been positive and have always caused a dark stain on our history. The light box depicts the consequences of the Holocaust on the Jewish culture. The upper section of the box features a Jewish star with LEDs on its corners. When the area around one of LEDs is touched, the name of a country where the Jewish migrated will appear on the correspondent edge. The star represents the Jewish symbol known as the Star of David and the countries represent the six countries where the most Jewish people migrated to after the holocaust. The lower portion of the box is cut into 4 portions two quarter circles and 2 squares each of them are arranged on a corner either on the bottom or the division in between the star. Each corner has a color representing an emotion. The colors are black, blue, red, and white. The black signifies death the blue signifies sadness the red signifies anger and the white expresses peace. Each of these emotions were experienced as a consequence of the holocaust making them important.

The Holocaust involved the conflict between the Jewish people, homosexual individuals, the Romani (Commonly known as Gypsies), Slavs, the Polish and any other race that was not perfect enough for the Nazi’s. During this time the Jewish people were segregated and killed (5,860,000 Jewish casualties). This genocide was caused because Adolf Hitler viewed the Jewish and the other aforementioned races and people as vermin and that, they should be exterminated just as an infestation of rats or cockroaches would. This occurred during a six year span (1939 – 1945). Most of the events that affected the Jewish people occurred in concentration and execution camps in Europe. Camps Such as these included Treblinka, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Dachau, Chelmno, Sobibor, Belzek and Majdanek. The Germans often placed messages at the entrances of concentration camps for those who resided in them; a popular one is Arbiet Macht Frei which means “Work shall set you free “this message was meant to encourage the Jews to work during the time they lived in the camps the Jewish however took this as an insult.  The Jewish culture during this time also had to move to segregation free countries such as the United States, Canada and France, Brazil and most of the countries in the U.K to escape oppression and concentration/execution camps. After the war they moved to their homeland (Israel) and many stayed in the countries they migrated to. Israel was fought by the Israelites and then given to them under the U.N Partition Plan. This plan did not appeal to the surrounding Arab countries which led to further conflict the Jews fought to maintain their land successfully. To end this conflict the Balfour Declaration (1926) was created which was Britain’s approval for Israel to become a self governing state. This was not accepted by the neighboring countries as well, and led to a conflict that continues to this day. All of the above mentioned actions and history are important because it shows the dark and negative consequences of oppression, and because many people lost their lives for no good reason. This relates to the project by trying to convey peace and to oppose oppression of all types in the world.

The holocaust caused dismay and discord in the world. This led to many battles and deaths. The consequences of this ranged from the loss of lives to the loss of ideas (there could have been a genius inventor among those that were killed during the holocaust). People still look down on this occurrence for many reasons but the Jewish people have adapted and learned to continue their lives, some are even proud of the numbers that were tattooed on their fore-arms during the holocaust from their time living in the concentration camps.

Poem

Manuel Martinez

In fear they dwelt

The Holocaust created many consequences for the Jewish people.

They lost many brothers.

For it to end they prayed before their temple steeples.

Hitler would kill one how he would kill the others.

To escape, the Jewish people ran,

Searched for free countries they did.

All they asked for was peace amongst man.

Some did not flee but under darkness hid.

Their emotions were ignored.

Anger, sadness and fear were felt.

They were motivated by beliefs in their lord.

Unfortunately, after they were freed in fear some dwelt.

Reflection #1

1. What is going well? I feel that everything is fine, completing my work is fairly easy though time consuming but I have managed my time effectively.

2. What is not going well? I feel that job shadowing is hindering the people who participate in it. I have a peculiar problem since my group member is in job shadowing aswell and this is putting my group at a major disadavatage. recommendation: Next time group 1 job shadowing person and 1 that is not job shadowing.

3. What do you need to do to make that you meet all of your deadlines? I have worked at my own pace only speeding up in situations where there is not enough time in the day. I also keep my eye on the clock to verify that I am going according to schedule.

4. The project is fun, and worry some to me since there aren't many parameters so that I know what my boundaries are. I also worry about the job-shadowing situation that I already mentioned. I also feel that when it comes to construction the fab lab is going to be to crowded and people are going to have to wait for others since there aren't many machines.

5. If you had to rate your own progress what score would you give yourself? (5) I think I am doing fine, I say this because I am moving at the pace the non jobshadowers are moving at. I also feel that i have done everything possible until now.
