The first selection I have in this is a reading response paper to the book Letters to a Young Teacher by Jonathan Kozol. I feel this best relates to this standard because through reading the book I learned how hard it is to be a first year teacher, and how much it helps to have a mentor there to guide you through it. I also learned some of the challenges that can happen to a first year teacher, and it helped me see the whole experience in a new light.
I chose this piece to display in my portfolio because I feel that it best displays not only my writing style, but also my comprehension for what goes on in the first year of teaching. I also liked this work because it shows how I would apply points that Kozol talks about in his book to my future classroom. I put a lot of thought into how the components would transfer to my classroom and I believe it really shows through this piece.
The second selection I have chose for this standard is my Teaching philosophy. I believe this relates to the standard because it thoroughly explains what exactly I plan on doing in my future classroom. It shows my believes about different forms of teaching such as constructivist methods and the Responsive Classroom. This essay also aligns with the standard because it shows why and how I plan to motivate my students through my teaching process.
I chose this piece to display in my portfolio because I think it displays exactly what I plan to do in my classroom. It is a very well written and thoroughly explains how I plan to uphold structure in my future classroom. It also displays my understanding of different theories of classroom management, as well as an understanding of what I have learned so far in my education, and how it applies to not only the classroom setting but real life as well.
