Introduction to Exceptional Learner

During the Fall Semester of 2005 I enrolled in Introduction to Exceptional Learner. The class taught me so much about not only the field of Special Education, but also the role I could play as a future teacher in Special Education. During the semester we were exposed to a video called "F.A.T. City" presented by Richard LaVoie. The video gives the audience an understanding of what it is like to be a child with a learning disorder through real-life, in your face classroom examples. I was also able to work in a classroom at Highland High School that specifically focused on students who suffer from mild to moderate mental retardation. I was able to participate and help in the classroom on so different levels. This class has really been a life-changing experience for myself. Before taking the class I never thought I would be able to teach a child who has special needs. After completing this course and spending time in a special education classroom I have decided to get a dual certification in Special Education Secondary Social Studies.
