Pasting Web Pages Made Elsewhere

Here I am experimenting with pasting Web content made elsewhere into my TaskStream ePortfolio

Below is what results when I paste the source code for my page at Rider that can be found at this URL:

http://users.rider.edu/~tmcgee/

This paste was unsuccessful on two fronts: the images did not survive, nor did the formatting, but I understand why. My Rider page uses CSS, and the CSS code is not included in the file for the page, but is stored in a separate file that the code in the page file points to. So, simply copying the source code for my Rider page did not provide all the information that is used to display that page. The same is true for the images which, in keeping with the kind of development practice that Dreamweaver fosters, I have kept in a separate folder, and to which I pointed with relative (rather than absolute) links. What that means for pasting pages made elsewhere into the TaskStream folio and Web space is that pasting will work for pages that include all the necessary information in the page itself but will not work for pages that store some of the relevant information in other files and folders in a given page's Web site directory.

Home Page

Welcome

This site, like those that preceded it, will grow by a process of accretion. While I appreciate the wisdom in that adage about a failure to plan being a plan to fail, I have no careful plan for this site for two good reasons. First, I don't have time to plan it carefully. Secondly, I don't want to restrict its natural growth and evolution unnecessarily. That said, the site is not without form or aspiration. Its goals are two: To establish a digital expression of my current professional identity as the Associate Director for Faculty Development at Rider University; to serve as a place to archive various materials that might serve me and my constituents. So, with no further ado, I hereby start building.

Goals

I hope to help faculty reach their goals for teaching and learning. I expect to succeed in part because of what I know, in part because of what I do, but mostly because of what faculty know and do. My parts of the interactions will include asking questions, listening, pointing to resources, and providing encouragment. I hope that my enthusiasm for the subjects of teaching and learning will inspire my colleagues to try new approaches. I hope that what I know and what I do will help me win the respect of most of my colleagues.

Plan

(Revised Bulleted List from My Professional Development Plan)

  • Improve communication processes
  • Investigate strategic opportunities to examine teaching practice and student learning outcomes
  • Experiment with innovative instructional strategies including advanced use of the newly upgraded Blackboard Course Management System (CMS) and the recently acquired "sandbox" tools: Moodle, ShareStream, Wimba, and iTunes University .
  • Develop avenues for determining faculty development interests, needs, and priorities
  • Improving the existing web-based resource center that offers faculty access to materials addressing the enhancement of undergraduate teaching
  • Investigate possibilities for external funding for innovative programs in my areas of expertise
  • Develop means to share knowledge about best practice in teaching and learning with faculty
  • Collaborate with other University programs and offices to integrate/coordinate learning opportunities for faculty
  • Build active partnerships across Rider's academic and other relevant departments and programs
  • Build active partnerships with off-campus constituents, including 2- and 4-year institutions of higher education
  • Build active partnerships with national organizations engaged in promoting teaching and learning
  • I plan to submit proposals to present at two academic conferences and to submit two articles on teaching and learning for publication.
