We are very fortunate to have been able to contribute to school improvement in many ways. We generate extra money thriugh the repair and resale of donated vehicles which allows us to help out with various initiatives.
Green Project: We donated $2000.00 for the purchase of the trailer that the "Littel Green House" was built on and is transported to events on. The "little Green House" is a miniture house that is being built by the construction trades cluster using green technology to show students and community people what can be done to save the environment by using green building materials and techniques.
Principals Grants: We donate $2000.00 each year for the principal to allocate in grants to other programs here at the Career Center. Instructors write proposals as to how they would use and extra $500.00 to improve their program and the Principals review board decides who will get the four grants every year.
Math in CTE workshop: We were one of the first programs to get involved with a math in cte workshop where cte instructors were paired up with math instructors to write cte lesson plans that incorporate math into cte courses. We have always been teaching math in our courses but these workshops help us show the students the importance of paying attention in their math class because we show the relevance of math as it is a integral part of any most technology.
Car repair program: We take in vehicles from the school community as well as surrounding community and make repairs with no labor charge to help people who would otherwise struggle to get the necessary funds for vehicle repairs. I see this as a win win because a vehicle in disrepair is unsafe for the driver as well as other cars on the road.
Relationships with businesses: We have very strong relationships with local businesses some of which offer services and some of which need our services. We have accounts with many local vendors who supply parts and materials at a reduced cost and we also have relationships with many of the local automotive dealerships and repair facilities who serve on our B&E committee as well as interviewing and hiring our student interns. We have roughly 20 suppliers and 20 dealerships
Participation in Governor's Academy: We were one of the first programs at the Career Center to qualify for dual enrolment status with Northern Virginia Community College and become part of the Governors Academy.
Relationships with NOVA: Even before the dual enrollment and Governors Academy, we had a strong relationship with Northern Virginia Community College, we have had an articulation agreement with them for many years which only went away with the start of the dual enrollment process and the Governors Academy.
