Video Production

Context:
This video production was created in Integrating Media and Technology into Teaching, Spring 2007. I was under the advisement of Mr. Jeff Goodman. Members of the group were Theresa Fox, Lisa McIntosh, Sherry Smith, and Sherry Suttles. Our group chose to use a story board for the Stinky Cheese Man, by Jon Scieszk and Lane Smith. We used a video camera, I-movie, and I-tunes to help create and edit this production. The local for the video was on the Appalachian State University Campus in
Boone, <st1:State><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 14pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">North Carolina</SPAN></st1:State>.

Impact:
This artifact is just one of the ways that I can integrate literature and modern day technology into the classroom. This allows you to take a book beyond the point of just a story.  I learned about planning, scripting, shooting and using different camera techniques, logging, organizing the program, editing using Macintoshes and iMovie software, and using a program such as QuickTime to complete this project. I can use the video that my group produced as an example. In this activity every child would have the opportunity to participate and take turns in performing various tasks. At some point each child could have used the video, been an actor or actress, prop person, or editor. During this activity. Using this activity in the classroom will meet the needs of a variety of students. Before beginning this type of project I would need to send home a Student Release Form that would give me permission to let a student be part of the video.

Alignment:

This artifact met the following North Carolina Standards for Elementary Teachers:

NETS - T Technology Standard I-B, Teachers will demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

This standard was met by participating in the making of the video. I was allowed to use the video camera with the tripod and practice the different techniques to get certain shots such as; zoom in and out, jump-cut magic, pan left or right, tilt up or down, and the high and low angle shot. This allowed me to use an up to date computer and computer software such as the Macintoshes, iMovies, and iTunes.

NETS - T Technology Standard II-D, Teachers will plan for management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.

This standard was met by integrating literature and media technology. This is an activity that could be used in many units during the year such as; the Weather Unit, you could have the students set up a weather desk and be meteorologists and give the weather report daily. You could allow them to interview their grandparents on Grandparents Day.

NETS - T Technology Standard VI-B, Teachers will apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.

This standard was met by working as group to complete this project. This would allow you to have every child in your class have a part in the making of the video. The ADHD child would benefit from the hands on instruction and the visual students would be able to see the steps to complete the project as well as the end result.

NETS - T Technology Standard VI -A, Teachers will model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.

This standard will be met by obtaining a student release form signed by a parent or guardian to allow the student to be in a video. This release form may be translated for the Spanish population.

NCDPI Standard 6, Indicator 1, Elementary teachers have an understanding of the basic concepts of the arts. Teachers understand the basic vocabularies, materials, techniques, and thinking processes of each arts discipline (art, music, theatre, dance).

This standard was met by working together as a group to choose a book, to create a detailed script, filming, editing and incorporating music and sound and many other different features into the video.
