DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 30, 2014

PURPOSE: By participating in the dis Online Discussions cussion forums you will be exposed to appropriate experiences interacting with your peers and your instructors. You are supposed to discuss ideas together. A discussion forum is only effective if you respond to others and properly engage in constructive conversation.

ASSIGNMENT: Create a discussion question that prompts your peers and instructors to react or respond (collaborate) using proper digital etiquette (communication). Reply to one of your peer's topics.

STEPS TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT:

Posting a Topic:

Watch or read the resources provided to come up with a discussion topic (see below) or come up with one on your own.
Go to the "Communications" tab at the top then click on "Discussion Board".
Select "Research and Information Fluency".
Click on "Create New Topic" button.
Enter a subject for your post then compose the question referencing one of the resources (using proper etiquette and grammar/ spelling).
Click the "Post Topic" button when complete.

Replying to a Topic:

In the "Discussion Board" (see steps 2 and 3 above) read through your peers' posts.
Click on the "Post New Reply" button to a peer's post you choose.
Reply to one or more of your peer's posts, remembering to use proper digital etiquette.
Click "Post Reply" when complete.

TOPICS TO CONSIDER:

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
- How do we make others more aware of their rights and responsibilities when using digital technologies?
- Are students infringing on others' rights by the way they use technology?
- Does Freedom of Speech allow anyone to post anything they want on the Internet?
- Can and should the Internet be censored?
- How do you think you would feel if someone used your creative work(s)? Would it make a difference whether they did the following:
  - Asked your permission to use it?
  - Gave you credit as the creator?
  - Changed the work or added to it without asking you?
CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS:
- Read the "Monkey Self-Portrait Continues to Raise Questions of Copyright Control" below
  - Who should be the "owner" of this photograph?
  - Once the image is posted on the Internet (Wikipedia), who owns the copyright?
  - If I strap a camera to an animal, and take images from its point of view, do I own the copyright? What if I'm not triggering the camera directly, but it's on a timer? What if I set up a wildlife photography trap that's triggered by motion or sound? Technically, isn't the animal "pressing the button" then? Does intent matter? What if an animal makes a painting?
- Read "Top Plagiarism Scandals of 2013" below
  - How serious of a problem do you think plagiarism is?
  - Reference one of the stories in the article to support your opinion.
- Did you know the song "Happy Birthday" is copyrighted? Watch the video below to learn about the ongoing lawsuits surrounding this popular tune!

NOTE: Please refer to the deadline assigned through English classes. Also note assignments will be scored and enter in Progress Book for Digital Citizenship during Quarter 3, even though the assignment was due in English during Quarter 2.

PURPOSE: To defend and credential your learning in selecting and evaluating online sources, proper citing of sources, and producing original works.

ASSIGNMENT: Through your freshmen English class, you will complete a short research and writing/presentation assignment. Within this assignment, your English teacher will provide a writing prompt. Your product will be based upon your research.

Directions

PURPOSE: To defend, credential, and reinforce your learning in selecting and evaluating online sources, proper citing of sources, and producing original works.

ASSIGNMENT: Use the resources provided to formulate and write an opinion on a current controversial topic related to digital rights and responsibilities.

STEPS TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT: Select one of the options below.

Option 1 (Net Neutrality and Internet Censorship):

Read the resource below: "The Debate Over Net Neutrality." (Be sure to also read the overview and background on left side.)
Answer the prompt questions in 250-350 words, using proper grammar and spelling by clicking on "Text and Image" button below. You can type and save your draft directly in Taskstream, or type up in another doc and copy/paste in the "Text and Image" box when you are finished.
Make sure your writing is original by properly paraphrasing and citing your work.
Attach your Works Cited below by clicking on the "Attachment" link.

4. Google: The reluctant censor of the Internet

When we think of online censorship, the first thing that comes to mind is totalitarian governments like China. But Google is one of the biggest unofficial Internet censors in the world.
