Level 2: To boldly go

where others HAVE gone

Dagnae is not a bad kid. In fact, she is a great kid, an awesome kid. She draws, works part time, takes a couple of college classes along with high school, designs costumes from photos, and even got back with Sorin. She did have to scale back on her gaming to maintain sanity. This meant leaving a job in her clan just at a time when another high-ranking official was also quitting.

“I had to face the fact that I was addicted.”

Every once in a while she still gets the urge to get on, but it is not every time she enters the house or walks by a computer. When she does, she helps newbies or does some more of the fighting she loves.

A newbie is a newcomer to a game. They do not know the rules, and they are just kind of wandering around trying things out and asking questions. At this point, you are a newbie to game making. You have learned a very basic game design, along with some math and science, but you do not really know what you need to do or how you are going to be able to do it.

Since your goal is to make an educational video game that can replace seven important concepts within one of your classes, you need to see what others have already done. On Level 2, you wander around and determine where you are headed. First decide on the subject and concepts you are teaching. Next, find, play, and evaluate five educational games—as close to your topic as possible.

    Instructions and Points

500

Find at least five educational games in your subject. Suggested websites follow these instructions. 100 points per game found.

Play and then evaluate the five games—their subject and the content learned from the game with use the following rubric. Evaluate content, user friendliness, addictiveness, and appearance. What technique did the game designer use in the game to teach? What were the rules and what did you have to do to win? Using your imagination and using your knowledge of games that you enjoy, how would you modify this game to make it more appealing to other students? Would you use this game to study for a test? Would you use this game if you were a teacher? Did this game help you to understand the topic you are studying? 400 points per game evaluated.
