Recommendations to the Field

These two letters, written by Amanda Martinez and Lisa Rogers, specifically correlate with two competencies within the commitment to social justice learning outcome: an appreciation of and respect for diverse perspectives, cultures, lifestyles, and ways of knowing; and a commitment to serving others. Amanda wrote of my intentionality in having conversations about social justice and diversity with my student staff. For me, intentionality is the key to having conversations with students that puts respect at the forefront. Through making an intentional effort to getting to know the diverse perspectives and identities that my students hold, I am able to identify ways that I can engage them in conversations and subsequently push them out of their comfort zone. I think this is evident in Lisa’s letter as well – she wrote about how I challenged her with care and respect. In reference to the second competency, I think there are several ways to serve others. In terms of a commitment to social justice, I think it is a disservice to my students and peers to not engage with them in these types of conversations. Therefore, I demonstrated the second competency by having these conversations with my students, peers, and supervisors. Personally, I find meaning and excitement through having challenging conversations – about diversity and social justice, but also existential questions about life – and incorporating this into my professional work is key.
